Quebec Sales Tax ("QST") - Change in Basis and Rate of Calculation
We would like to inform you that with effect from January 1, 2013 there will be a change in the basis and rate of QST. This is the first in a series of changes introduced by the provincial government in Quebec designed to harmonise the QST system.
The other changes will be coming into effect from April 1, 2013 and should they impact our clients, we will advise you nearer to that time.
What is changing
Today, QST is calculated on the GST-inclusive amount at a rate of 9.5%. Effective January 1, 2013, the QST will be calculated on the GST-exclusive amount at a rate of 9.975%.
Both calculation methods result in the same invoice total.
Please find below a link to a page on Revenu Québec's website which explains the changes in further detail with examples demonstrating the new calculation method:
How does this impact you?
Because the change in calculation method of QST will not result in an increase in the overall cost of our supplies, you will note that the total amount on the invoice and the total amount of GST and QST collected does not differ pre and post the changes.
