The second set of standards to be enacted under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA, 2005), the Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation combines accessibility standards in three areas – information and communications, employment and transportation. Similar to the Customer Service Standard, these standards apply to all organizations in the public, private and non-for-profit sectors that provide goods, services or facilities to the public or third parties. The requirements in the regulation will be phased in between 2011 and 2025 and have been designed to give organizations time for implementation. The purpose of this guide is to provide a basic understanding of the new standards, the associated timelines for compliance and resources and guidance for implementing the requirements. Implementing accessibility requirements into your day-to-day operations is not going to be an easy task. There are many considerations, depending on the type and size of your organization as well as the available internal resources and constraints within your organization. This guide was written to support organizations in Ontario in complying with the new standards, however, the resources and information provided can be adapted and used in other jurisdictions to promote inclusive and accessible practices in the provision of goods, services or facilities.
