Thomson Carswell Announces Launch of Canadian Military Law Annotated

Thomson Carswell introduces the first comprehensive overview of the law governing the armed forces in Canada

Toronto, ON. -

Thomson Carswell (www.carswell.com), Canada’s leading provider of specialized information and electronic research solutions to the legal, tax, finance, accounting, and human resources markets, announces the launch of Canadian Military Law Annotated.

Written by the Honourable Justice Gilles Létourneau of the Federal Court of Appeal, and Colonel Michel W. Drapeau, Canadian Military Law Annotated will be introduced at the Supreme Court of Canada on November 17, 2006.

Over two hundred guests are expected at the launch, including several justices of the Supreme Court of Canada, the Federal Court, and the Federal Court of Appeal.  Members of the legal profession, senior military leaders, and Defence Attachés accredited to Canada are also expected to attend.

“We are excited to bring this important work to the military and legal communities,” said Don Van Meer, President and CEO, Thomson Carswell.  Canadian Military Law Annotated makes the diverse body of statutes and laws that are applicable to the Canadian military and their families accessible in a one-of-a-kind reference work.  It fills a customer need that no other product in Canada currently addresses.”

Canadian Military Law Annotated is the first comprehensive and exhaustive overview of the laws governing the armed forces in Canada.  It contains everything a judge, lawyer, member of the military, writer, or student could need to understand, interpret, and apply Canadian military law, including an extensive analysis of the National Defence Act and overviews of other important pieces of legislation (the Visiting Forces Act, the Crimes against Humanity and War Crimes Act, the Geneva Conventions Act, the Court Martial Appeal Court of Canada Rules, the Military Rules of Evidence, and the NATO Status of Forces Agreement).  Canadian Military Law Annotated also offers a detailed treatment of the history, hierarchy, structure, organization, traditions, and customs of the Canadian military.

Canadian Military Law Annotated is an important and timely work that addresses the need for wider understanding of military law in Canada.  It is an excellent research and teaching tool,” said Rachel Francis, Director, Legal Market.  “We are proud to include Canadian Military Law Annotated within Thomson Carswell’s rich catalogue of legal information products.”
